How to Search for a PingRoom Room on iPhone

Search by Room name, public handle, or invite code, then inspect the preview before you open or join the result.

Two approved PingRoom avatars compare three miniature Room doorways while Pingo peers through the matching arch.

To search for a Room in PingRoom on iPhone, open Discover, choose Search, then enter the strongest identifier you have: the invite code, public handle, or Room name. Check the result's identity and preview before you open or join it.

PingRoom 1.6 redesigns Discover on iPhone. Search is different from browsing the nearby map: it can find your own matching Rooms and results across PingRoom without asking for your current location.

Use the strongest identifier first

The more precise the input, the less interpretation the result needs.

What you haveSearch withWhat to check
A 12-character Room invite codeThe complete codeRoom name and type in the preview
A public handleThe handle, with or without the shared link around itExact handle and expected Room identity
A Room nameThe distinctive words, not a generic word such as FamilyHandle, description, owner context, or the invitation source
A physical QR codeUse the scanner insteadPreview before joining
A venue or nearby communityUse Rooms NearbyPlace label and distance context

An invite code is access material. Do not paste a private Room's code into an untrusted form or publish it merely to make searching easier.

Search in Discover

  1. Open PingRoom and choose Discover.
  2. Select the Search button at the top of the screen.
  3. Enter the invite code, public handle, or useful part of the Room name.
  4. Read the grouped results before selecting one.
  5. Open the candidate and inspect its preview.
  6. Open it if you are already a member, or choose whether to join or subscribe if you are not.

The search view temporarily replaces the nearby map and discovery shelves. Choose Cancel to return to browsing.

Read the result groups

PingRoom separates matches you already belong to from results across the service.

  • Your Rooms contains matching Rooms from your current Room list.
  • On PingRoom contains other available results returned by the search.
  • An exact public-handle or invite-code match can appear as a direct preview result.

If the same Room is both in your list and in the broader result set, PingRoom keeps the local membership result rather than showing it twice. That grouping answers two different questions: “Do I already have this?” and “Is this another Room I could inspect?”

Private Rooms do not become a public directory merely because names are searchable somewhere else in the product. A private invitation still depends on its code, link, QR, or an authorized in-app invitation.

Two approved PingRoom avatars pause outside one open miniature Room preview while Pingo waits beside the threshold.

Stop at the preview and check three cues

For an illustrative example, imagine someone tells you to join Workshop Notices. Searching workshop may return several communities.

Before joining, check:

  1. Name or handle: does it match the invitation you received?
  2. Room type: is it the private invitation, public Room, or Personal Room you expected?
  3. Context: does the description, owner information shown, or source of the invitation make sense?

If those cues conflict, leave the preview and ask the sender for the exact handle, code, or link. Similar names are not proof that two Rooms have the same owner or purpose.

Pingo the Pigeon, PingRoom's official mascot and fictional Chief Marketing Officer, is peering through a miniature doorway in the artwork. It is an editorial metaphor for checking a preview. Pingo cannot search accounts, inspect membership, enter a private Room, or approve a join.

Choose the other route when it is clearer

Search is not always the shortest path.

  • When the invitation is in front of you, scan the Room QR code.
  • When place is the useful clue, use the nearby public-Room map.
  • When you are looking for someone you already share Rooms with, use My People rather than treating a Room search as a people directory.

Each route should still lead to an identity check before a new membership decision. Discover helps you find a candidate; it does not decide that the candidate is right for you.

Update PingRoom on the App Store, open Discover, and rehearse with one Room you already know. Search its name, confirm it appears under Your Rooms, then cancel without changing membership.
