Scan the Room instead of typing the code
Point PingRoom at a Room invitation, check the preview, and join without copying an invite code character by character.
The Room invitation is on a sign across the table. You can read the code, type it, check every character, and try again—or point PingRoom at the QR code.
PingRoom supports joining by code, link, or QR. The current App Store listing includes all three options, and QR joining has been part of the shipped product since its first public release.
The scan does not silently add you to a Room. It opens the Room preview first, so you can check where the invitation leads before choosing to join.

Scan when the invitation is in front of you
Use the scanner when someone shows you a PingRoom QR code on another phone, a printed card, a noticeboard, or an event sign.
- Open PingRoom and go to Rooms.
- Choose Join a Room, then Scan QR.
- Allow camera access when your device asks.
- Hold the PingRoom QR code inside the frame.
- Check the Room preview, then choose whether to join.
The scanner can recognize a Room invitation code and PingRoom links for public or Personal Rooms. It takes you to the matching preview instead of making you identify the invitation format yourself.
You need to be signed in to use the in-app scanner and join. A free PingRoom account is enough; scanning a standard Room invitation is not a Pro feature.
Look at the Room before you enter
A QR code is a shortcut to the invitation, not a shortcut around the decision.
The preview gives you a chance to confirm the Room name and the information available for that invitation. If it is not the Room you expected, leave the preview. Nothing is joined merely because the camera recognized the code.
Pingo’s tiny room is an editorial stand-in for the preview. The fictional CMO can inspect the model; he cannot scan a real invitation, approve membership, or join on anyone’s behalf.
This pause is especially useful when several invitations are posted together. Scan the one you want, read the preview, and make the choice with the Room’s name in front of you.
Keep the code as the fallback
The camera is convenient, but the invitation still works without it.
If camera access is unavailable or you would rather not grant it, return to Join a Room and enter the invite code. You can also open a shared PingRoom link directly. These paths lead to the same kind of preview before the join.
A useful event sign can therefore show both the QR code and the readable invite code. People standing in front of the sign can scan; someone receiving the invitation in a message can open the link; anyone without camera access can type the code.
Place the invitation where the intended people can use it
A QR code is easy to photograph and forward. Treat it with the same care as its invite link or code.
For a public Room, wide sharing may be exactly the point. For a private Room, place or send the invitation through a channel the intended members already control. Private Rooms are unlisted, but an invitation is still a way in.
When the code is already in front of you, do not turn it into a transcription task. Open Join a Room, scan it, check the preview, and enter the Room you meant to join.
