How to Change a PingRoom Room Icon and Color
Give a standard Room a recognizable shared identity, then test two different Room looks before you rely on them at a glance.
To change a standard PingRoom Room's icon and color in the browser app, open the Room, choose Room Settings, select Edit, tap the current Room identity, pick an icon and color, then choose Save. The Room owner controls this shared identity.
Choose for recognition, not decoration. If you have two Rooms that matter at similar moments, give them different shapes and different colors, then send a harmless practice Ping in each one.
Decide what the identity should help you notice
A Room icon answers “which Room is this?” It does not explain the whole Ping. Keep the Room name and Quick Ping labels clear even when the identity feels familiar.
Use one simple rule for each choice:
| Choice | Useful rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Room name | State the group or purpose | Household or Studio handoff |
| Room icon | Choose an object or shape tied to that purpose | A home-like mark for Household; a box for Studio handoff |
| Room color | Separate nearby Rooms rather than encode urgency | Warm red for Household; muted green for Studio handoff |
| Quick Ping | Describe the event someone needs to understand | Dinner's ready or Proof ready |
Do not make red mean emergency unless the Room has a real, agreed emergency process outside PingRoom. A notification service cannot replace local emergency channels, access procedures, or direct contact.
Change the icon and color
In PingRoom's current browser app:
- Sign in and open Rooms.
- Choose a standard private or public Room that you own.
- Open Room Settings.
- Choose Edit.
- Tap the current Room icon or Tap to edit.
- Select one color and one icon from the current catalog.
- Choose Save.
The saved icon and color belong to the Room. This is different from a local chat wallpaper or personal theme. Apple's Messages guide says an iMessage group can have a shared name and icon, while Google Messages also documents custom RCS group icons. Microsoft Teams allows uploaded or preset group-chat images. PingRoom uses a catalog icon plus a separate Room color instead of an uploaded group photo in this flow.
Exact notification artwork still depends on the platform, device, and kind of Ping. The current PingRoom App Store listing says supported iPhone and Apple Watch notifications use Room identity, but do not assume every banner on every device will look identical. The Room name and Ping text must still stand on their own.
Make two Rooms visibly different
Changing one Room in isolation is easy. The useful test is whether you can distinguish it from the Room most likely to be confused with it.
Suppose an illustrative household has these two Rooms:
- Household, with a warm red home-like icon and Quick Pings such as Dinner's ready and Leaving now;
- Building desk, with a muted green box-like icon and Quick Pings such as Parcel ready and Visitor waiting.
The names already carry the meaning. The icon and color make the first glance faster. Using different shapes as well as different colors also avoids making color do all the work.

Pingo the Pigeon, our fictional Chief Marketing Officer, is inspecting the two shelves with the gravity normally reserved for quarterly planning. He cannot see anyone's Rooms, change their settings, or send a Ping. The people and miniature studio are an editorial example, not customers.
Run a harmless recognition rehearsal
Ask one other member to help with a two-minute test:
- Tell them you are sending two practice Pings and that neither needs action.
- Send one harmless Quick Ping from the first Room.
- Send a different harmless Quick Ping from the second Room.
- On each person's supported device, check the Room name, icon treatment, color, and Ping text.
- Ask which cue was easiest to recognize and which part was ambiguous.
- Rewrite a vague Room name or Quick Ping before adding more decoration.
This test confirms recognition, not guaranteed delivery. Focus modes, notification permissions, Room mute settings, connectivity, and platform behavior can affect what appears. A delivered alert also does not prove that someone read or acted on it.
Know what this edit does not change
Room identity and Room behavior are separate.
| If you want to change… | Use… |
|---|---|
| The Room's shared icon or color | Room Settings → Edit |
| The reusable messages, emoji, sounds, or order | Edit the Room's Quick Pings; see Room language |
| Where Rooms appear in your own list | Folders |
| A Personal Room's shareable QR treatment | Personal Room QR customization |
| Whether you receive regular notifications from this Room | Mute or notification settings |
Changing the Room icon and color does not rename its Quick Pings, change membership, grant permission, alter privacy, or move the Room into a folder. It also does not change PingRoom's app icon on your Home Screen.
Personal Rooms are a separate case. Their identity follows the Personal Room and handle model, and Pro QR customization has its own color, module-style, and center-artwork controls. Do not use this standard Room guide as a substitute for that workflow.
Keep the result quiet and recognizable
One strong icon and one distinct color are enough. If several Rooms all use the same bright color, color stops helping. If every icon is abstract, the catalog stops carrying meaning. If the Room name is vague, the artwork has to work too hard.
Start with the two Rooms you open most often. Make their names, shapes, and colors clearly different, then stop. A good Room identity should disappear into recognition after a few uses.
Open PingRoom Rooms, update one standard Room you own, and run the two-Room practice check before changing the rest.
