The empty drum

An empty washing machine is useful news when someone else has a basket waiting.

Leila had carried her laundry downstairs twice. The first time, the machine was running. The second time, it had finished, but the clothes were still inside.

Her housemate Ben was upstairs with headphones on, halfway through repairing a bicycle wheel. He had heard the end of the cycle and then forgotten it.

They agreed that whoever emptied the machine would send the next person a Ping.

On Saturday, Ben lifted out the last towel, left the door open, and tapped their saved Quick Ping: “Washing machine is free.”

Leila saw it while putting away breakfast. She took her basket down and started a load before leaving for the library.

By the time Ben came downstairs with his bicycle wheel, Leila's load was running. He propped the wheel against the wall and moved her empty basket out of the way.
