How to Make PingRoom Easier to Read
Choose a light or dark appearance, strengthen contrast, and optionally use plain-grey Ping surfaces in PingRoom's browser app.

Open Settings in PingRoom's browser app, then make three separate choices: set Appearance to Light, System, or Dark; turn on High contrast for stronger text and borders; and turn off Colour on pings if Room and accent colours make Ping surfaces harder to scan.
Change one setting at a time. Appearance changes the overall light or dark surface. High contrast strengthens boundaries within that surface. Colour on pings controls whether Ping surfaces use Room and accent colours or plain grey.
Choose the control that matches the problem
| What is hard to read | Start here | What the control changes |
|---|---|---|
| The whole page feels too bright or too dark | Appearance | Light, System, or Dark surfaces |
| Secondary text and card edges blend into the background | High contrast | Stronger text and border contrast |
| Coloured Ping surfaces compete with the message | Turn off Colour on pings | Ping surfaces become plain grey on this browser |
| The problem is interruption rather than readability | Mute the Room or one member | Future regular notifications from that source |
These controls can work together. Dark plus High contrast is a valid combination. So is Light plus plain-grey Pings. There is no universally best preset; the useful choice is the one that lets you identify the Room, read the Ping, and find the next action without strain.
Set the overall appearance first
- Sign in to PingRoom in your browser.
- Open Settings.
- Under Appearance, choose Light, System, or Dark.
- Revisit a Room with both short and long Pings before deciding.
Use System when you want PingRoom to follow the browser device's light or dark preference. Choose Light or Dark when you want an explicit PingRoom appearance instead.
Do this before adjusting contrast. Otherwise, you may strengthen a surface you were going to replace anyway.
Add high contrast when edges still disappear
In Settings, find Accessibility and turn on High contrast. The current control is described as “Stronger text and border contrast.” It is useful when secondary text, card outlines, or separators feel too close to the surrounding surface.
Check more than the large headings. Look at the smaller labels, the edge of a card, the selected state of a control, and the focus ring when you move through the page with a keyboard.
High contrast is not a brightness control. If the screen itself is uncomfortable, start with Appearance or the display settings on the device. Apple documents broader display and text adjustments on iPhone, and Microsoft documents contrast themes in Windows. Those operating-system controls affect more than PingRoom.
Use plain-grey Ping surfaces when colour distracts
Still under Accessibility, turn Colour on pings off. PingRoom then shows Ping surfaces in plain grey on this browser instead of applying Room and accent colours to them.
This is a display preference, not a Room edit. It does not remove or rename the Room's saved colour for other members. It also does not change the message, sender, Room name, or available actions.
That distinction follows a useful accessibility principle: colour should not be the only way information is conveyed. The W3C's guidance on use of colour explains why labels and other cues still matter. Turning colour off can reduce visual competition while leaving the actual Ping content in place.

Pingo the Pigeon, our fictional Chief Marketing Officer, is treating the grey tray as a quarterly simplification initiative. He cannot see anyone's Rooms, change a setting, or decide which view is more readable. The two people and their studio are an illustrative editorial scene, not customers.
Run a two-minute readability check
After choosing a combination, test it rather than judging the Settings page alone:
- Open a busy Room and a quiet Room.
- Read one short Ping and one longer Ping.
- Check a secondary label and a card boundary.
- Use the keyboard to move focus through one control if you normally navigate that way.
- Return to Settings and change only the option that still causes friction.
An illustrative household might prefer System appearance during the day, High contrast on all the time, and Colour on pings off on a shared kitchen computer. Another person can keep Room colours on in their own browser. Neither choice changes what the household has saved in the Room itself.
High contrast and Colour on pings are stored as browser-side preferences, so repeat the check on another browser or device instead of assuming the same view followed you. If a setting appears to have changed after clearing browser storage, set it again from Settings.
The visual reasoning behind PingRoom's restrained surfaces is covered in the Strike design system. The practical rule is simpler: let one signal be clear, and remove decoration that competes with it.
Open PingRoom Settings, choose the overall appearance first, then add contrast or remove Ping-surface colour only if it solves a specific reading problem.
