How to Reset Unread Counts in PingRoom
Clear every current unread badge from PingRoom without deleting History, muting Rooms, or stopping future Pings.

To clear every current unread count in PingRoom's browser app, review anything important first, open Settings, then choose Reset Unread under Notifications. The action clears the signed-in account's present unread indicators across Rooms. It does not delete History, mute a Room, leave it, block a member, or stop future Pings.
Use Reset Unread when the counts no longer represent a useful reading queue. If one Room still needs attention, review it before resetting everything.
Review before you reset
An unread count is a prompt to look, not a copy of the underlying content. Slack's guide to viewing unread messages and Microsoft Teams' guide to its activity feed make the same practical distinction in their own products: review and count management are related, but they are not the same action.
Before a global reset:
- Open the Rooms where timing matters.
- Check History if you need a broader chronology.
- Note any Ping that requires a reply or an action outside PingRoom.
- Leave the reset alone if the remaining counts still help you remember unfinished work.
The reset is deliberately broad. There is no benefit in clearing a useful queue just to make the number smaller.
Clear all current unread counts
When you are ready:
- Sign in to PingRoom in your browser.
- Open Settings.
- Find the Notifications section.
- Choose Reset Unread once.
- Wait for the confirmation that unread counts were reset.
PingRoom then refreshes the Room list and account total. If the action fails, the existing unread state remains the safer assumption; do not repeatedly click while the first request is still running.
Know what changes—and what does not
| Action | Present unread counts | History | Future regular Pings | Membership |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reset Unread | Clears them across Rooms | Stays available | Can create new unread state | Unchanged |
| Review one Room | Lets you handle that Room deliberately | Stays available | Continues | Unchanged |
| Mute a Room or member | Not a substitute for resetting every count | Stays available | Regular notifications from that source are quieter | Unchanged |
| Hide public Rooms | Does not clear counts | Stays available | Continues | Unchanged |
| Leave a Room | A different, larger decision | The relationship changes | Stops normal participation in that Room | Ends for you |
Reset Unread changes read state; it is not a deletion tool. The underlying notification records remain available through the product's History behavior. It also does not change another member's unread state.
If the same Room keeps producing more attention than it deserves, use the narrower receiving control after the reset. Mute that Room or a specific member rather than turning a one-time cleanup into a daily ritual.

In this illustrative scene, Pingo the Pigeon, our fictional Chief Marketing Officer, is confirming that an empty dish is not a lifetime achievement. A fresh token can still arrive. Pingo cannot inspect History, reset an account, send a Ping, or decide what you have read.
Prove that future Pings still work
After resetting, use one low-stakes example rather than waiting for something important:
- Ask a willing member of a test or household Room to send a harmless regular Ping.
- Confirm that it appears in the Room and can create fresh unread state.
- Open it normally.
The example is a product check, not a guarantee that a phone notification will appear. Phone display still depends on notification permission, device settings, Focus modes, connectivity, and the app's current state. Reset Unread only addresses PingRoom's existing unread indicators.
If no second person is available, simply leave the cleaned state in place and check the next ordinary Ping. Do not manufacture an urgent signal just to test a badge.
Use the right cleanup next time
An illustrative volunteer team may finish a weekend event with several Rooms showing old counts. The coordinator first reviews the logistics Room, records one follow-up task, checks History for the final arrival Ping, and then resets the remaining counts. On Monday, a new Ping creates new unread state as usual.
That sequence—review, reset, rehearse—keeps the control honest:
- Review preserves anything that still needs action.
- Reset clears the stale attention summary.
- Rehearse confirms that new activity still has a path back into view.
If the underlying issue is too many regular notifications, change the mute choice. If the issue is too many public Rooms in the main list, hide them without leaving. Reset Unread is for the count you have now, not the volume you will receive later.
Open PingRoom Settings, review the Rooms that matter, and use Reset Unread once when the remaining counts are no longer useful.
