How to Tell Your Family You're on a Work Call
Set up four household signals for calls, quiet work, breaks, and the end of the day. Send each update yourself when your availability changes.

To tell your family you're on a work call, agree on a short household signal and send it when the call begins. In PingRoom, create a private Room with On a call, Quiet work, Free now, and Done for today. Tap the matching Quick Ping when your availability changes, including when the call ends.
This is a manual household routine. PingRoom does not detect your microphone, read your calendar, or automatically change these messages when you leave a meeting.
Agree on what “busy” means at home
A closed door can mean a meeting, concentration, or simply that the room is cold. A signal is useful when everyone knows what to do after receiving it.
Decide together which interruptions can wait, how to get someone's attention when something cannot wait, and what Free now actually offers. It might mean “come in for a quick question,” not “I have finished all my work.”
In a home where two people work, use the sender's identity and the Room's recent updates to distinguish their availability. One person's Free now does not announce that everybody is free. A Ping is a message from that person, not a shared switch for the whole household.
Save four useful signals
This illustrative setup is for two adults sharing a home office and living space. Adapt the meanings together before using it.
| Quick Ping | When to send it | What the household has agreed |
|---|---|---|
| On a call | A work call begins | Save ordinary questions until a later update |
| Quiet work | A period of focused work begins | Avoid casual interruptions; use the agreed way to raise something time-sensitive |
| Free now | You can take a short interruption | A quick question or conversation is welcome |
| Done for today | You finish work | The workday's busy signals have ended |
Create a private Room called Home office, add these Quick Pings, and invite the household members who need them. Four Quick Pings per Room fit the free plan. The group-notification guide walks through creating the Room, inviting people, and sending the first update.
Choose a restrained notification sound. An everyday work call does not need to sound like an urgent household problem. Have each person check that the Room's notifications behave as they expect on their phone.
Add a time when it helps someone plan
On a call answers what is happening. Sometimes the household also needs to know when to ask again.
For a changing time, send a custom Ping such as “On a call until about 11:30.” Custom Pings are included in the free plan. Keep a changing finish time out of a fixed Quick Ping label so you do not accidentally reuse yesterday's promise.
For example, Sam starts a call at 11:00 and sends that message. Alex holds a question about lunch. At 11:30 the call overruns, so Sam sends “Still on the call; I'll Ping when free.” At 11:42, Sam taps Free now.
Send Free now when you can talk again. The earlier finish time was an estimate.

Pingo the Pigeon, our fictional editorial companion, has been waiting with one very small question. The useful part is knowing when to ask it.

Choose a phone signal or a visible sign
PingRoom publishes this guide. A phone update fits when someone may be in another room and already uses PingRoom with you. It depends on their connection, notification settings, and attention.
If people need to see your status while walking past the door, a physical sign may fit better. BUSY Bar describes a visible status display with manual and automatic controls, and Luxafor describes an office busy light with app integrations. Check those products' current compatibility if automatic call status is what you need.
Your phone's Focus settings solve another part of the problem: controlling notifications you receive. Apple's Focus guide explains notification filtering and sharing a silenced-notifications status. A PingRoom message gives your household the specific meaning you agreed on. It does not override anyone's Focus settings.
Put the signals where you will use them
Start by sending from the Room. On iPhone, you can also explore the home-screen widget workflow for repeated Quick Pings. Test the setup before a meeting rather than learning its behavior while somebody is waiting.
Keep the routine to meaningful changes. Send On a call when it starts and Free now when you can talk again. Install PingRoom and set up your household's four signals.
