# How to Set Up a Safety Check-In With a Friend

A useful safety check-in has three parts: an agreed deadline, a small set of signals, and a response plan for a missed check-in. PingRoom can carry the signals, but the people in the plan still decide what they mean.

Create a private room for you and the friend who is checking in. Add **Leaving**, **Arrived**, **Call me**, and **Need help**. Before the trip or meeting, agree when **Arrived** should appear and how long to wait before following up.

## Separate a missed response from a distress signal

No Ping can mean many things: a flat battery, no connectivity, disabled notifications, or a forgotten tap. Treat it as uncertainty, not proof of danger. **Need help** is an explicit negative signal and should have a faster, clearly agreed response.

Use acknowledgement when the sender needs to know that a friend accepted the alert. Delivery and acknowledgement are different: a push may reach a device without being seen.

An optional device-side arrival trigger can send **Arrived** at a chosen boundary without continuous server-side location sharing. Keep the manual action as a backup because mobile operating systems may delay background events.

## Write down the escalation path
